Kamala Harris is pulling off a stunning turnaround right now
Trump was almost certainly going to crush Biden as of two weeks ago. Now, Harris has spiked enthusiasm and fundraising beyond expectations and given Democrats a real shot to win.
Before Biden dropped out of the race on July 21, Democrats were bitterly divided as to whether he should. I argued here that he should give Kamala Harris a shot, because a Hail Mary pass in the fourth quarter of the election seemed at least a little more hopeful than a certain loss to Trump. I was also watching folks on the left who’d sharply criticized Harris and her politics before suddenly come around and embrace her as the only viable alternative to Biden in this high-stakes moment, after the assassination attempt on Trump appeared to cement his victory. Her image rebounded from cringey to campy and “cool” in the course of a week, which felt like a feat of political genius, though it was entirely crowdsourced by the internet. Some called me clueless and naive for being hopeful about Kamala and predicted the left would dump her as quickly as they’d nuzzled up to her. But the extent to which they’ve been wrong so far has stunned even me.
